The Gloria Story invites us to a great rock’n’roll-party on their latest album “Born to Lose”. I hear a lot of retro vibes from the thirteen tracks, most of all from glam rock and hard rock from the seventies, but also with some doses of punk in the spirit of Ramones. Music for love, dreams, and warm summer nights, the band Dorena, hailing from Göteborg, write about their new album “Nuet” (“The Present”). And it does feel summery in this instrumental, beautiful post rock where they mix old and new sounds, peaceful contemplations and grand post rock explosions. Taste a couple of tracks here below.

Douglas Unger released his second full length album this Spring, “Old News”, seven years after his debut in 2006. If we’re talking genre we land in country rock and American rock land, with representatives like Ryan Adams and Wilco, but I’m also reminded of other icons like Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits and Bruce Cockburn. I think it’s a fine, fully enjoyable album where Douglas makes his personal mark in these well-trodden grounds. The sound is great: close, earthy and dirty, like if we we’re listening to him in a small club, and his voice, which has both ardour and authority, is like it’s made to live out in this music. Definitely one of the best efforts I’ve heard in the genre in the last years.

The experiment-happy Cyan Marble, which I wrote about in the Autumn, is back with a new EP, “Maya”. And also this time they bring their sense for the theatrical and their unchecked progressive rock. Try the starting track here below.

Misth, hailing from Stockholm, released a sparkling debut rock album during Spring, which is definitely worth checking out if you like the combination of metal, melodic hard rock and progressive rock. In front of a gang of brilliant musicians and scarred veterans, who come from the predecessor Mercury Fang, we find singer Maria Rådsten. Mostly known from before as a member of the group One More Time, it sounds like she’s really found her hunting grounds as she’s impressing with her register, dynamics and strength.
There’s a lot of candy here for one whose choosy with rock; everything from tight, progressive excursions, to ominous metal riffs to melodic choruses that explodes in a kind of hard rock party. Nostalgic as I am I get quite a few vibes from both the seventies and the eighties with Dio, Black Sabbath, Yngwie Malmsteen and the likes. Sometimes I just get a flashback from one of the many guitar sounds thats strewn across the record. An album where they don’t hesitate to squeeze out the very last from the songs where five of the ten songs run over 6 minutes, with the epic finishing track “Day of Retribution” as the grande finale.
