Georgia Barbershop – “It’s Alright, It’s Okay, It Only Took Seven Years”

June 14, 2013 at 10:59 am

Georgia Barbershop

It sounds like an old cassette tape demo recording from the seventies or eighties by an English garage- or punk band. Often I find it hard to hear the lyrics from the somewhat can-sounding vocals. It’s straight, simple rock riffs without detours and extravagance. A combination I probably wouldn’t have chosen for my music menu if it hadn’t jumped into my inbox. But it feels good listening to this, and my foot starts moving with the rough guitar rhytms. And when the bass starts pumping with a wavy sound and is followed by the catchy guitar figure in “Trees Passing”, it’s time to surrender. The band’s name is Georgia Barbershop, the album “It’s Alright, It’s Okay, It Only Took Seven Years” is their debut and they are now on their way working with their second album.

Old Amica

The space travellers and folk-lofi-indie-pop duo Old Amica have released the second part of “The Burning Dot”, which I wrote about in February. Here they are with the starting song “Dunes” from the five-track EP.

The Fiery Piano – “Second Space”

The Fiery Piano

Gustaf Montelius is back with his solo project The Fiery Piano, which I presented here the first time in 2011. Now it’s about the debut album “Second Space”, 10 songs with his own variant of bedroom pop; indie pop characterized by Gustaf’s individual voice, somewhat untidy shelves and tables, the large mixed with the small and a lot of playfulness to the nice melodies.

Sans – “Inte ens natten”

December 19, 2012 at 5:08 pm

Sans

I have to turn the volume up quite a bit to be able hear anything when I start to listen to  Sans new album “Inte ens natten”. It’s almost like they deliverately have turned down the volume as a comment to all radio mastered music, where others try to push out as much volume as possible, hoping to shout down all other music. I’m met by a sound bordering to mono, which also takes some time getting used to, but when I finally get into the Sans world there’s a lot of beauty to discover here; poetic, beautiful lyrics in a dreamy, soft, shoegaze-like melodic pop. Personally I prefer when the sound pops out of the speakers enfolding me with it’s own atmosphere, instead of sounding from within a box, but at the same time Sans music feels so characteristic with this that it’s maybe an important part of their low-voiced music. Turn up the volume and listen for yourself in a couple of songs here below.

Star Horse – “Crush”

Star Horse

The shoegaze band Star Horse released their debut EP “Crush” in the beginning of the month. It’s a quite pleasant experience with dreamy, light shoegaze, massive layered guitars and a relatively small sound, on the border to lo-fi. I get impressions of humility, joy of music and a charming ingenuousness in the beautiful melodies. Listen for yourself here below in the beautiful PLS (Song For Rico) about a lost and missed friend.

Francobollo – “Basketball”

Francobollo

Today I changed the design here on the blog, as I was seriously tired of the old look. I hope that you’ll feel more comfortable here now, with less clutter and more air to breathe. So, this is the first post on the new site.

And it’s about Francobollo, a band of soulful lunatics that moved to London and apparently are on the way of having quite some success there with their music. The music videos are indeed something special together with the songs, and when you have seen them their “lo-fi grunge-pop” appear to be contagious. They have earlier released the single “I Found a Bike Today” and now, a couple of weeks ago, the new song “Basketball”. You’ll also find the song “Sense” here below.

Släktträff och Dödsmord

No, it’s not a headline from the evening papers (Family Reunion and Death Homicide). It’s actually two artists that call their solo projects  Släktträff and Dödsmord respectively, and who have choses to release a split-EP together. The EP is called “Till allt som varit dött” and can be heard on Soundcloud. And their music do fit together well, with Släktträff’s instrumental music and Dödsmord’s lo-fi indie. You can listen to a song from both artists here below.

Släktträff was started by Alexander Sjöstedt in 2008 and has so far released two albums and an EP, which you can listen to on Spotify. You can also find Släktträff  on Facebook and on Soundcloud.

Dödsmord has been around since 2009 directed by Oskar Östby. He says that it’s “an attempt to test and show if  the beautiful can be that disgusting ugly, and the ugly to be the most beautiful.” Follow Dödsmord on Facebook and on Soundcloud.

Norddan Fox – “Songs from the Pharaoh-12″

August 13, 2012 at 3:54 pm

Norddan Fox

In the end of the eighties 8-bit video game consoles, from Nintendo and Sega, dominated in the TV-couches. But newer and more powerful technology was on it’s way, and Triangle Corp. had developed a game console, shaped as a pyramid, Pharaoh-12, which could boast with 12 bits.

The intent was to start marketing Pharaoh-12 in 1989 and 12 original games was developed for the launch. The music to these games was created by Swedish composer Norddan Fox. Unfortunately Triangle Corp. failed to find the necessary investors in time to be able to mass produce the unit. Soon the new 16-bit consoles took over the market and the entire project died.

Norddan Fox’ music was hidden away and forgotten during a long time, until  Petter Lindhagen, from Tired Tape Machine,  convinced Norddan to let the world hear the songs. Together they started the label Feeder Recordings and a couple of months ago they released the album “Songs from the Pharaoh-12″.

Listen to one of the tracks here below and listen to the entire album on Feeder Recordings’ Bandcamp page.

Dream Curtain

Dream Curtain

Normally William Hamparsomian plays and writes music in the band Another Nation’s National Anthem. Last year he started writing music on his own and created the project Dream Curtain to have an outlet for these songs.

Here it’s about a dreamy electronica, somewhat lo-fi and far from the band’s guitar driven, alternative rock. He tells that the music is created spontaneouly at the spur of the moment, and that it’s difficult to remember what he thought about when he created it, and that applies to the artist name as well. But now afterwards he finds the word combination quite fitting with the curtain as something to hide behind and the music that is derived from the dreams, from the subconsious mind.

You can listen more on Dream Curtain’s Soundcloud page and follow him on Facebook.
