Here’s a couple of tracks to taste Tyred Eyes’, hailing from Göteborg, latest EP “Ghost”. They deliver a melodic, garage-sounding rock’n'roll punk where the two singers give everything in every song; music that feels like it’s made for an emotionally charged and sweaty club gig. The band was formed in 2009 and has earlier released an EP and an album.
The punk band Tiger Bell released their EP “Slaughter’s Daughter” last month, a record full of fast, garageband-sounding melodic rock. Here’s a taste from the EP with the title track. Great song!
The song “Slaughter’s Daughter” came about as Tiger Bell stumbled upon the roller derby team with the same name, googled their home page, became seriously inspired, grabbed the guitars and wrote down the song on a piece of paper – like if it was there all the time waiting to be written.
The Shy Lips, hailing from Göteborg, released their second EP “Nowadays” earlier this year. It’s fun to listen to this music, as it’s unpredictable, happy and with a mix of styles that gives me a sense of recognition, but when I try to catch what it is, it escapes me. There’s an intimate garage-punkish sound, with a laidback, natural attitude, like if they would have entered a stage in Manchester in the eighties as a warm-up for The Happy Mondays. They send out tentacles to the sixties, with The Kinks as the most obvious reference, there’s a dose of The Smiths, ska-rhytms and then also indie pop vibes. Well, great music in any case.
Automobilist is a new pleasant band acquaintance for me. So far, they’ve released an EP with four songs, ”The Collapse”, which shows their garage-sounding rock, somewhat odd and different, with surprising twists and turns in the songs, but still with simple, efficient rock-punkish choruses. The early Talking Heads comes to my mind, also because of the singer’s sometimes talk-singing style, which feels rather close to David Byrne’s.
I will stay in Malmö with today’s second post. It’s the band Bruce, who recently released their debut ep ”Folk kämpar” (“People struggle”), an album which is recorded live from what I understand, and which tastes warm garage rock and punk shot straight from the heart. They say themselves that they’ve been inspired by BRMC, Captain Beefheart and Pascal and also by artists like Tom Waits and Bryan Ferry.
Last Autumn I wrote about Coyote Deathbed, a somewhat mysterious band. I do know, though, that Måns Rohde Wittsell is involved in the band. Måns normally is the singer and guitar player in the band Wittsell 3, a trio which was formed in 2010, and that recently released their debut EP, “Using Palettes”.
It feels like a mix of older and newer influences, of classic blues and blues rock mixed with garage rock and a dose of grunge. Besides drums and bass guitar they are armed with a distorted 12-string guitar and wah-wah pedal, and manage to create a special sound and a cool jam-vibe in the songs.
The trio Carousel says that they are inspired by the sixties and bands like The Jam. And I can clearly hear that in the four songs on the EP “Count Me In” they released a little while ago. They have a basic garage rock sound backing pop songs with hooks that you catch pretty fast when you listen. You can listen more on Spotify and on their site. They also have a Facebook page. Here’s the title track from the EP:
Today I’ll present a couple of songs from FuFFenS’, hailing från Hälsingland, album “Tveeggad” that was released in October. It’s a really good and diverse album where they have crafted their very own style and the associations I get enters from different directions as I listen. I hear Jakob Hellman, garage rock, some Bo Kaspers Orkester, indie pop, a whiff of Hälsingland and of course a bunch of great songs with good melodies.
The last time I wrote about John Duva, a little more than half a year ago, they were just about to release an EP, when they signed with the label Transsubstans. They changed the goal to release a full length album instead, and last month it was finally launched.
If you have liked them before, you will hardly be disappointed now. Here they perfect their route to raw, punk-influenced garage rock with lyrics in both Swedish and English, and you can listen to and download the song “Arbetsnarkomaner” (“Workaholics”) here below.
If someone can take over the heritage of Wilmer X‘ ”malmöitic” rock veins today, it’s probably Dalaplan. And then I’m thinking about the Wilmer X that during the eighties toured like crazy and shouted “Kör dig död” to the audience while the sweat poured all over the scene.
There’s not as much blues in Dalaplan’s music, but the more of punk, garage and energy, more than enough for everyone. The five member band Dalaplan was formed from the remnants of Pachanga, which I have written about before. In 2010 they released their debut album and last year the EP “Feber” (“Fever”), and here below you can listen to two of the songs from the EP.
