The quartet Rooni, hailing from Stockholm, released their debut single “Run (Into My Arms)” a couple of weeks ago, and next week the follow-up will be available, “Danny’s Gun”. Behind the microphone we find Gustav Nilsson, whom I wrote about a year ago when he released his album “Makeup On, Letdowns Off”. And I do recognize some of it from the earlier recordings, in the groove and in the retro vibe with a dose of classic pop and rock from the seventies, but at the same time it’s of course something completely new about the sound.

They say themselves that bands like Pixies, Stone Roses and Big Star have been sources of inspiration, but add that they might not sound at all like these. Big Star and a little of Stone Roses is what I come to think of when I read this, and with a garage-indie sound added to it we’re closing in on what their music sounds like. Run (Into My Arms)

At first it was a little hard for me to relate to the band Kolonin’s music. Their unrestrained mix of styles and songs that sometimes feel like that they don’t move forward, in one song even to marching rhythm, didn’t go directly to my music heart. A DX7-sounding trumpet synth can be accompanied by a chopped metal guitar whereaafter they dive into a bridge with jazz vibes. Synth pop-figures are mixed with rock and overall a punk feeling, where the singer adds to this feeling with his somewhat nasal vocals.

After a while it does sink in, though, their characteristic style, where they seem to do whatever they feel like, and I can still hear it’s Kolonin. Judge for yourself here below in the latest single “Krasha ner” and the video to “Andas”.

The Jamhouse Riot has probably beaten some kind of record here on the blog, after they contacted me last month. I’ve started writing about them twice and twice I’ve been sitting here wondering where they have gone with their pages and music. They have changed the band name two times during this month and finally landed in The Jamhouse Riot. Third time lucky then.

I fully understand these name changes, as the variants before, “Made In China” and “Gravel Pit”, wasn’t unique enough as band names, and would have made it harder for new listeners to find them on the Internet. Today it’s just as important to establish some kind of relationship with the listeners as it is to get attention from the start on blogs, social media and other places, something many more bands should consider. Also, I think it’s fun and honorable to be let in so early in artists’ careers, that these things happen.

And what about the music? That I liked their music was indeed the reason I was going to present them here from the beginning. Well they play a blues rock inspired by the seventies with vibes from bands like Led Zeppelin, early Whitesnake and Black Crowes, and, like the final? band name implies, with a jam feeling and youthful joy of playing that is hard to miss. They’ve released two EP:s this far, “Simplify This (Pt. 1)” and “Simplify This (Pt. 2)” and you can listen to one of the songs here below.

Marry Me Bandana Girl

Today the band Wonder Coast release their debut album “Keep Sleeping On the Beach”. I haven’t had the time to listen to the entire album, and it’s not up on Spotify yet, but they have three songs out since before, where you can download one of them here below. From what I hear Wonder Coast present a pleasant mix of brisk brit pop, vibes of freedom thirsty let’s-runaway-classic rock and garage indie with a joy of playing, and I will definitely check out the entire album soon. The band says that the song “Sandy” here below is not about a person named Sandy, but rather about “that old sandy creek”, a bay in Blekinge from where they come, also inspired by The Clash and old movies from the fifties.

Den stora vilan, hailing from Göteborg, have announced their third full length album, “Förvandling”, to be released on December 5th. To give us a feeling of what it’s about, they have launched a single with two songs, and a surprisingly spectacular video you can check out here below. I think it sounds really interesting in their psychadelia that has a warm jam band vibe to it, and in Swedish too.
