Last month the band Krog released their debut EP “Anno” with five songs. Grand, melancholic pop is a sweeping description of what I hear, pop that sometimes steps in on Coldplay’s domains and sometimes the dramatic film-epic, underlined by marching drums, orchestral strings and horns. I’m also reminded by the eighties from the characteristic synth lines, the melodies and the big rooms. I like the singer’s voice, which has an interesting tone and where the vocals overall are well-sounding and well produced. Here’s the first track “Winter Nights” and the animated video to “Valhall”.
Here’s another production from Dream Curtain, aka William Hamparsomian. “Glowing” is the name of the song, a song that follows in the tracks of the predecessors with it’s dreamy experimental electronica, maybe this time a little more changing with more surprises around the corners than the earlier songs. He’s definitely carved out his very own sound now, a sound that can be recognized, which is an accomplishment in itself.
Here’s the debut single from the duo Forever’s Gonna Start Tonight, which is being officially released on March 19th. The song “Impossible” is taken from their upcoming EP “I Got My Perfect Sweater On” which they promise will take us “on an epic journey through memories of lost love and youth, dreams, defeat and hope.”
It wasn’t long ago that I wrote about the band Norma’s single “Joan”. Now they’ve also released the album where the song belong, “The Invisible Mother”, the band’s second full length record. It took a while before before I could really get a grasp of the album, but after listening through it a few times it has grown quite a bit for me. It’s a diverse album and somewhat hard to place in a distinctive genre, as I hear Kraftwerk influences, grand filmic Vangelis-ambience, catchy pop choruses as well as indie pop vibes from today. It’s all sewn together with a dark, suggestive atmosphere, which runs throuch all the tracks on this special and interesting album.
Californiaman, or Joel Igor Hammad Magnusson which he calls himself when he plays the bass in Me and My Army, is on his way to release his solo album “Golden State of Mind”. It is said that the album will be out in Spring and the focus of the music is on what he calls blue eyed soul: music inspired by soul pop from the late seventies/the early eighties headed by artists like Steely Dan, Robert Palmer, Doobie Brothers, Phil Collins, Don Henley among others.
He has already uploaded a number of songs on his Soundcloud page, and it’s a beautiful collection of tracks, like a warm, laidback californian breeze sweeping into my room in this cold Swedish early Spring. The retro vibes are indeed there, like the the mashup of the mentioned influences he claims it to be, and so wonderfully untrendy that it perfectly slips in between all indie, Americana and electronica.
