I’m heading for the weekend with this new single from the UK band Mamma Freedom. Soul coloured funkrock with an awesome, cool, retro-inspired sound. Could it get any better? The single “Cast the First Stone” is taken from their second album “The Voodoo Suite Sessions I”.

Last year Vita Bergen released their debut EP, which gave them quite some well-deserved attention. Three of the songs from the EP are also present on their first album “Disconnection”, released a week ago. When they showed us one of the new songs in Spring, “Alexia“, I thought it felt like they were going in a somewhat new direction towards a darker and rawer sound. Where they were heading becomes very clear when I listen to the starting track of the album, the postpunk-sounding, dystopic “In the City”, a song with an intensely pumping bass and cruel guitars where the synths have moved into the background. The strong, earlier songs “Disconnection” and “”Curtains” form the hit backbone on the album together with the new  “Closer Away”, but are now placed in the right environment, where it feels like they have washed away the sweetness and replaced it with an unpolished blackness. Having said that there are plenty of graceful beauty in the songs, in the melodies and in grandiose soundscapes, sometimes closing in on the bombastic. A varied and enjoyable album.

Raring is the name of a new duo who released their debut single “Tillfällig fördrivelse” last week. It’s about noisy and surprisingly catchy indierock which sounds like it was recorded in a punk garage at the end of the 70’s. Listen for yourself:

This week De Montevert released a single from her upcoming album, an album which will be released on the 2nd of December. It’s a low key indie tune that warms in the Autumn chill, with a tale she performs with an everyday simplicity and uprightness which makes it feel authentic.

You may have heard Christian Wallin and Mattias Svensson before in this blog as a part ofthe band Killer Clan of F.U.N. They decided, though, to wipe off the punky glamrock makeup, throw out the poses, and start Hothead together with the bass player Tony Håkansson. The debut EP “Ready For Whatever” was released this Autumn and is like a trip back to their roots, without sounding retro. This is right-in-your-face-rock with punk and heavy bluesrock alternating in rather short tracks of 1,5-2,5 minutes length. Wallin often steps up to the microphone with his cool laidback vocals even if the trio’s harmonies sometimes dominate and come out as a highlight of their sound. With Wallin’s effective, attacking guitar riffs and the great groove from the rhytm section they make me want to hear more from the band, it feels a bit like an introduction to something bigger.
