Old Kerry McKee’s debut album “Wooden Songs” was released recently. It’s a broken, dark, desperate, tense blues and folk music where the sound is a part of the expression just as the vocals. I’m almost surprised how easy I can climb into Old Kerry’s world of sound after listening for a short while, and the nuances appears on an album that feels rather varied. Unfortunately the album isn’t available digitally yet, as far as I can tell, but you can listen to a track here below, plus watch a video of “Death, Oh Death”, recorded live.

Kompaniet, hailing from Sala, takes us back to the early seventies’ psychadelic and progressive rock on their debut album “Vi i dalen”. Well, in fact there’s a range of influences that meet on the album, like blues, folk, jazz and rock which is also significant for that era when artists started to mix genres and experiment wildly. The songs started to live their own lives, both when it comes to length and structure. Kompaniet have found their own strong character in the middle of all this, as they cruise between Pink Floyd-influences, blues, Swedish progressive rock and folk music, from a relaxed ambience to drama.
Yes, I’m quite impressed by this debut. I don’t know more about the band than that they started in 2011 and that there are ten members in the band. You can find two songs to listen to here below, with the second one being the finishing 16 minute long “Nere i Dalen”.

Robert Hill was early caught by Woodie Guthrie’s music and it was natural that he soon also got to be inspired by others like Lightnin’ Hopkins, Reverend Gary Davis and of course the inevitable Bob Dylan. With Guthrie as the obvious guiding star these influences characterize his music on the debut album “What Are We Waiting For”, which was released this Autumn.
Brian Kramer, with his earthy blues fingers, has produced the album and guests on two of the tracks with his guitar. Besides that it’s just Robert we meet, with his acoustic guitar and sometimes his harmonica, on the 13 blues and folk songs. I think it’s an impressive album where he, despite the distance in time and space, and with only 20 years of age, makes it feel so authentic, close and honest. Authentic meaning that it’s Robert we meet, his stories, feelings, frustrations and view of the world. Add to this an excellent blues and folk guitar and you have an album that is easy to get caught by.

Behind The Late Call we find Johannes Mayer, based in Stockholm, who recently released his third album “Pale Morning Light”. It’s a quite fitting name for the album, which has that ambience that arise when the sun’s first rays show up on the horizon. Beautiful, somewhat expectant, calm and still and nothing that bothers you.
The first song “Wandering Through An Empty Field” paints some brushstrokes of Coldplay, emphasized by the fact that Johannes’ voice tone reminds of Chris Martin’s. He never continues into the arena, though, and walk away in a different direction with a melodic, close, rhytmically varied singer-songwriter pop. It’s en even, dynamic album, that maybe miss those catchy songs which get stuck in your head, but with a such a pleasant experience as this, it doesn’t bother me at all.
