Julia Thomasdotter has a solo project going on which she calls Deer. Earlier this year she released the single “Your Thoughts”, a song you can listen to here below. It’s a folk-vibing song with heavy tom beats, acoustic guitars and sweet voice harmonies that keep me glued to the speakers for the entire length of 5 minutes, although there is little dynamics in the song. Well, there are variations in the shape of a catchy chorus, but it certainly is a rather hypnotic track which can take quite a few spins.

The Danish-British artist Alex Vargas is not only an impressive soul-tinged singer, he’s also a most creative producer and songwriter, which he shows on his latest single “Giving Up the Ghost”. I take the opportunity also to add his single from last year, “Till Forever Runs Out”, a much softer song which shows another side of his unique mix of electropop, soul and R&B.
Orange Red is the solo project of the musician Jonas Love Williamsson, hailing from Göteborg. In October he released his debut EP “Ocean” through the French label Scandinavian Crush. Inspired by shoegaze from the 90’s and ambient music from the likes of Brian Eno and Angelo Badalamenti he has created beautiful soundscapes with songs that walk the line between melodic synthpop and moodsetting musical landscapes. Clean guitar figures and dreamy, distanced vocals are embedded in glittering, sweet and retro-sounding layers of synths accompanied by electronic beats. It’s quite a varied album, though, and there are plenty of diversions from this theme. Here are a couple of songs from the EP.
I thought I’d make an excursion to Turkey and the band powerdrunk now. The band are releasing their EP “Hindu Lunchbox” this Autumn, an EP which is not easy to describe in a few words. Their rock sound feels like a warm Mediterranean breeze sweeping over us, heated by progressive rock, funk, jazz, classic guitar pop and a hint of psychadelia in their own special mix. It’s a tight trio who lean on bass, guitars and drums, but who often include string sections, brass or synth figures for that extra spice to the ambience of the songs. You can’t get anything but happy when you listen to Crying Day Care Choir. Their new EP “Wonderlust” is no exception to that rule. There are no minor scales clouding the blue sky as far as we can see, and we don’t worry about anything as we join the band in a sing-a-long to strong, bright melodies and a flower-dressed, acoustic folkpop, heartened by their warm smiles.
