As the band Mandylon has taken a long indefinite break, the singer Sven-Holger Rosenvinge focuses on a solo career. First up is the song “Bluebird” which was released in December, a melancholic ballad which grows in a beautiful and grand way, and my thoughts goes partly to Muse, both when it comes to the ambience and occasionally to Sven-Holger’s vocals. His voice feels quite special and has, as he writes himself, an androgynous side which he uses neatly in the variations and effects in the song. More songs are coming up soon.
Like it was the start of a road movie from the beginning of the seventies The Plastic Pals take off with a classically rasping engine warmer riff on the single “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea”. The song is a warm-up before the release of the band’s new album “Turn the Tide”, to be released in February. It’s been four years since they launched the last album, “Good Karma Café”, so it’s going to be quite interesting to hear what they’re up to this time, and the single promises a lot. A few days ago they also released another song for free, which is available on their site.
And after a quiet year Killer Clan of F.U.N. finally presented new material this week. It’s the song “Hocus Pocus” which was released on Tuesday, with a somewhat different sound than before, but still with some great rock’n’roll as their cornerstone. They say that, during their “pause”, they have recorded 15 new songs, which will be released over the year. Here’s “Hocus Pocus”.
Here’s a song and a video from Elias Krantz, “Young Ends”, taken from his album “Night Ice” which was released in 2011. As the album now is available on vinyl he took the opportunity to draw some attention to it by releasing this video, made by the Mexican artist and illustrator Derzu Campos. They found each other when Elias was traveling around Mexico a couple of years ago, and Elias asked Derzu if he would like to make a video to “Young Ends”, a video that later was recorded in the Mexican mountains. A beautiful illustration of Elias’ instrumental, slightly suggestive progressive rock. Elias is also involved in Mackaper’s new album, which was released on December 19th, an album I will get back to in a little while.
Just before Christmas Killerball released the single “Lost In the Woods”. The song is taken from the EP “Good Memories, Good Morning”, an EP that so far only exists as a physical CD-album. Unlike the electrified debut EP “St. Epone”, which was released in 2011, all the songs are acoustic, which feels just right.
Since the cornerstone of the band have been their performances on streets and squares, their special characteristics shows much better here and besides the new acoustic versions of the earlier songs “Forcefed” and “I Can’t Find It” they also present more sides of their music than the blues based rock they have recorded before. “Lost In the Woods” is my favourite from the new EP where they in the beginning start digging in the grounds around Buffalo Springfield in the late sixties before they give hints of Paul Rodgers-contellations and also to what they’ve done before. Mystique, some psychadelia, folk rock and really sweet.
