Secret Cameras – “It Doesn’t Matter”

Secret Cameras

Secret Cameras, hailing from London, are warming up before the release of their debut EP with the second single from the record, “It Doesn’t Matter”. It’s a track that breathes of postpunk and alternative rock and which gives me plenty of Suede vibes. The song is quite intense, culminating in a massive sound explosion in the chorus, still with a sweet melody hook. The first single is also worth checking out. “Going Places” is a bit calmer and with the synths more in the foreground, but with the same dense, ambient sound and an ending where they pour in everything they’ve got.

Desperat K – “Solo”

Desperat K

The duo Desperat K, whom I presented less than two years ago, released the single “Solo” a few weeks ago. Like before they serve us colours from the eighties with postpunk-vibing synthpop, here in a song that pulsates with melancholy in the dark Uppsala night. It grows into an epic, beautiful synth ballad, in a similar style as their first track “Östermalm”. Fortunately they have just started working on their first full length album, which we will be able to enjoy some time next year.

Vita Bergen – “Disconnection”

Vita Bergen

Last year Vita Bergen released their debut EP, which gave them quite some well-deserved attention. Three of the songs from the EP are also present on their first album “Disconnection”, released a week ago. When they showed us one of the new songs in Spring, “Alexia“, I thought it felt like they were going in a somewhat new direction towards a darker and rawer sound. Where they were heading becomes very clear when I listen to the starting track of the album, the postpunk-sounding, dystopic “In the City”, a song with an intensely pumping bass and cruel guitars where the synths have moved into the background. The strong, earlier songs “Disconnection” and “”Curtains” form the hit backbone on the album together with the new  “Closer Away”, but are now placed in the right environment, where it feels like they have washed away the sweetness and replaced it with an unpolished blackness. Having said that there are plenty of graceful beauty in the songs, in the melodies and in grandiose soundscapes, sometimes closing in on the bombastic. A varied and enjoyable album.

It’s For Us – “Not Enough”

It's For Us

In April I wrote about It’s For Us and their single “Wish Things Were Better“. Last month they released another song and video from their upcoming EP. It’s called “Not Enough” and is another piece of great postpunk, this time tinged with a bit of indie pop.

RA – “Scandinavia”

RA

This week I’m starting with a tip about the band RA, hailing from Malmö, and their debut album “Scandinavia”, which was released in March. RA is exploring the darkest corners of post punk with massive guitars and an ominous atmosphere. This is for those who are not afraid of screaming guitars that jump out of the speakers threatening with chaos and doom. Here are two songs from the album:
