Emil Fitger – “A Long Wait Beneath the Snow”

April 13, 2012 By: Pär Berglund Category: Electronica, Pop No Comments →

Emil Fitger

During years Emil Fitger was a singer, songwriter and guitarist in the alternative metal band Melaina, a band I’ve written about before. The band split up a couple of years ago and Emil decided to continue as a solo artist.

This has now resulted in his debut album “A Long Wait Beneath the Snow” where he’s heading in a quite different direction than before. First of all it’s about electro pop with nice, somewhat melancholic melodies, but his acoustic guitars and different influences makes this a quite varied album.

From the harder industry vibing start with “Forgotten Streets”, to the dance pop beat in “Numb”, to the beautiful, ambient “Levanah” to the finishing, almost hymnlike “Rays of Light” to name some examples. Emil has a good, smooth voice for this and experiments a lot with effects and overlays on the vocals, which works really well in most cases, even if I think it gets over the top in some song where it makes me feel too distanced to the song.

You can listen more on Emil’s Facebook page and on Spotify. Here’s the first song on the album, “Forgotten Streets” plus the videon to “Numb”.

Let’s Say We Did – “Let’s Say We Did”

April 10, 2012 By: Pär Berglund Category: Indie, Pop, Rock No Comments →

Let's Say We Did

I’ve written about Let’s Say We Did a couple of times before here on the blog. Then it was about their EP trilogy, where the last one was released about a year ago. I November they released their first full length album, an album where you will recognize about half of the songs from the the EP:s.

Everything has a new production, though, with Pelle Gunnerfeldt behind the wheel, and I think that he’s done a really good job at refining the band’s nice, rough indie pop. The sound feels more open, with more depth and with a good variation, but still with that rough feeling over these charming pop melodies.

The band name exposes something of their influences, as the singer Sebastian Fors tells me that the name is taken from the song “Let’s Not and Say We Did” by Silver Jews.

You can find Let’s Say We Did on their Facebook page and you can listen on Bandcamp or on Spotify. Here is the first song from the album “It’s OK” plus the latest video “Blue Skies”:

Molotov Jive – “Storm”

April 03, 2012 By: Pär Berglund Category: Pop, Rock No Comments →

Molotov Jive

Maybe it was dreams about playing at the biggest arenas, or maybe it was the songs that demanded it. In any case,  Molotov Jive hailing from Karlstad, went to California and to the star producer Sylvia Massy to record their third album “Storm”.

They recorded in February last year and recently, in March, they released the album. And there’s no doubt that this is pop and rock made for the big arenas. Such an ambition can easily end up in a big yawn, if you can’t back it up with energy, personality and great songs, but I don’t think that they fall into any pits here, and that they have created a really good album.

It’s grand and full of energy, first of all in the first half of the album, until they slow it down with the most quiet song on the album “Just Leave”, giving us a well-needed break before they speed up again .The feeling is a bit like U2 when they are as most energetic but with a darker post punk vibe from the late eighties as the foundation. The songs that sticks the most with me is “Friendship”, which you can listen to and download here below, and “Manhattan”.

And of course. How did they come up with the name Molotov Jive? They write that they wanted a band name that felt explosive, something that signaled fire. “We thought that it should be ‘like dancing on fire.’ Do the Molotov Jive”.

You can listen to the album on Spotify and on Wimp. Follow them on Facebook and on their site.

Theo Berndt – “Supersized”

March 30, 2012 By: Pär Berglund Category: Indie, Pop No Comments →

Theo Berndt

It’s been two years since I wrote about them, and then they called themselves The Berndt. They have now grown by adding a letter and becoming Theo Berndt but first of all they have a new album brewing, which is going to be released in the end of May. It’s called “F.E.A.R.S.” and as the name suggests, it’s about exactly that, fears. Here’s a first single from the upcoming album: “Supersized”.

You can follow the band on Facebook.  On Spotify and on Soundcloud you can listen to the entire single, which also includes three remixes.

Drivvedsfolket – “Vilket gäng”

March 29, 2012 By: Pär Berglund Category: Alternative, Indie, Pop 1 Comment →

Drivvedsfolket

Drivvedsfolket, hailing from Norrköping, write that they have developed their sound inspired by artists like Arctic Monkeys, Pugh Rogefeldt, The Black Keys, Florence Valentin, The Kinks et. al. They show this on their latest EP “Vilket Gäng! (“What a gang!”), which you can taste a song from here below. They sing in Swedish and sure, I do get associations from Pugh Rogefeldt as I listen, but also from Bob Hund, Arctic Monkeys and sixties’ rock, which all in all make a special mix.

The band started out in 2009 and sang originally in English. Then they called themselves Driftwood People, suggesting that they were carefree people, living for the day. That was actually an irony, as they claim to be a bunch of nervous and long-winded individuals.
When they later on started using Swedish in their songs, they simply translated the band name directly, creating a new Swedish word. So now you know what drivvedsfolk means in Swedish. Maybe.

You can listen to Drivvedsfolket on Spotify, on Wimp and on Drivvedsfolket’s Facebook page.

Kids

March 28, 2012 By: Pär Berglund Category: Electronica, Pop No Comments →

Kids

The duo Kids, with the two members Jonas Linngård and Maria Pettersson, took the band name as a tribute to MGMT and their song with the same name. I haven’t listened that much to MGMT, but it’s quite obvious that they have been an inspiration for Kids, where they move in the same music area of pop electronica with nice and efficient melodies.

Kids recently released their debut EP with five songs, a really good EP full of nice melodies and hooks. It’s quite dynamic and airy, with a clear “less is more”-vibe in the arrangements. It doesn’t hurt either that the EP starts with the irresistible guitar figure and intro to the song “My Sincerest Apologies” which drags you right into the album.

You can download the album for free on Kontroll Recordings’ site and listen on Soundcloud, Wimp or Spotify. Follow the band on Facebook.

Leo August

Leo August

Leo August is an artist who recently released a two-track single, produced by Johan Forsman in Göteborg. It’s two songs soaked with vibes from the seventies and folk inspired pop. I liked the first track best, “Lady Overseas” with the strong chorus and choirs. Listen for yourself here below.

You can liste to both songs and follow Leo August on his site.

FuFFenS – “Tveeggad”

March 22, 2012 By: Pär Berglund Category: Garage, Indie, Pop No Comments →

FuFFenS

Today I’ll present a couple of songs from FuFFenS’, hailing från Hälsingland, album “Tveeggad” that was released in October. It’s a really good and diverse album where they have crafted their very own style and the associations I get enters from different directions as I listen. I hear Jakob Hellman, garage rock, some Bo Kaspers Orkester, indie pop, a whiff of Hälsingland and of course a bunch of great songs with good melodies.

You can listen more on Spotify and on Wimp and you can find the band on their site and on Facebook.

Sameblod – “Loud”

March 21, 2012 By: Pär Berglund Category: Electronica, Pop No Comments →

Sameblod

On their way towards the albumet “Braided Memos” which will be released April 20th, the duo Sameblod have released the song “Loud” as a first taste. And “Loud” certainly deserves it’s name in this bombastic electronica pop. It still echoes in my room and my chair is vibrating from the deep bass.

You can follow Sameblod on Facebook and on Tumblr. The first EP they made last year is available on Bandcamp.

Pro424

Pro424

Behind the artist name Pro424 you’ll find Max Karlander. The name comes from the word project and the name of the Tascam portable studio Max used for his first recordings. He’s released two albums so far and the latest one, the EP “Dreams” was released in December; an album with mainly electronica pop fit for the dance floor. The first album “Soundtrack of a Frozen Time”, was released a year ago and went in a completely different direction with more chillout and ambient music.

You can listen to his music on Bandcamp, on Spotify or on Wimp. You can find Pro424 on the home page and on Facebook. Here are two tracks from the latest EP:
