The Dahmers – “Demons”

The Dahmers

Punkish garage rock or garage-sounding punk. Whatever you call it The Dahmers, hailing from Bromölla, serves us a fantastic rock’n’roll riot on their album “Demons” which makes me turn up the volume some more notches and be carried away. A great album I didn’t know I really needed until I started to listen.

Livboj – “Opium Twist” – EP

The duo Livboj,  Jonny “Calzone” Klingvall and Jonas Borgström, released their debut EP “Opium Twist” last week. Four great indie-songs in Swedish. Here’s the title track:

Feivel – “Friend”

Feivel, whom we’ve met before as Elin Hörberg in the Malmö band Skilla, has released her second single, “Friend”. The song is taken from the upcoming EP “Feivel”.

Chirping – “Ambitions”

Here’s another great single from Chirping. “Ambitions”:

Bigger Trees – “Whistleblow My Mind”

Here’s the debut single from the band Bigger Trees, “Whistleblow My Mind”, with two beautiful, ambient and a bit minimalistic songs.

Sudakistan – “Rabia”

Sudakistan is a quintet where most members have Southamerican roots. “Rabia” is their first single from their upcoming debut album, a song where they let loose their mix of latino rhythms and garage rock.

Electro pop with Johan Reinhold, HvH, White Birches and a Square ska-rock blast

Johan Reinhold

Johan Reinhold

Johan Reinhold – “Feel For You”

“Feel For You” is Johan Reinhold’s warm tribute to his mother, who passed away a year ago of cancer. Here you’ll also find the explanation to why Johan took a pause from the music, even though he was in the middle of the success with his songs, among them “Shoot Me Down“, which I wrote about. He writes that he went through a hard time and he yearned for the opportunity to be able to tell his mother how much she meant to him. He did this in the best way possible: with this song.

The song is also his way of picking up his music career where he left it, and is one of the two songs of the single “Closing Doors”, due for release May 12th. All net proceeds will go to charity to help fight cancer.

HvH – “Cause of Your Destruction”

HvH stands for “Hammar village heights” and is the name of a new indie trio from the outskirts of Stockholm. Their debut single is called “Cause of Your Destruction”, a hymn-like electro pop song, rather naked but yet grand. The song is also a part of a new election campaign album for F! (Swedish feminist party). It’s an album with songs from 65 artists, well known as well as less known artists, among them Robyn, The Knife, Nina Persson, Crucified Barbara, The Bear Quartet, Ane Brun and many others. A quite unique initiative in Swedish politics.

White Birches – “Stands of White Birches” – EP

The electro pop duo White Birches, Jenny Gabrielsson Mare and Fredrik Jonasson, promised us an EP this Spring, and now they’ve fulfilled that promise with the new four-track collection “Stands of White Birches”. It’s about dark, dreamy, beautiful melodies and with a sort of muffled electro pop sound. We’ve heard two of the songs before, and one of the songs “The End of The Line” was on my list of the best songs of last year. With the new “Take Me Dancing” they show us that their source of inspiration is certainly still there:

Square – “The Reversed Spanish Chair”

It’s been almost six years since I wrote about the band Square. They are now in the process of releasing their fourth album “The Reversed Spanish Chair”, and I notice that they haven’t lost any energy since the last time. Not the least, and they’ve been doing this since 1998, music that could be described as a mix of garage rock and ska with a turbo engine built into it. I’d even say that they sound better than ever.

I said that they were in the process of releasing the album, which actually means that they are releasing the album song by song; every other week a new track is presented until August later this year. So far they’ve shown us three songs. Here are two of them:

Raw rock, psychadelia and dreamy pop from Danmarck, Les Big Byrd, Fou De Toi and Navelin

Danmarck

Danmarck

As a guitarist and songwriter in the band Moll Flanders Rickard Ahlgren wrote some songs that didn’t fit the band. To make something out of these songs he started the solo project Danmarck, where he’s now started to release the first singles, three of them so far. He chose the name  Danmarck as a tribute to his friend Calle, who sadly died in the tragic accident during Pearl Jam’s concert in Roskilde in 2000. Here are two of the songs, with a punky, raw and somewhat garage-sounding and grunge-inspired rock. Love it.

Les Big Byrd – “Back to Bagarmossen”

Les Big Byrd is a band where you’ll find Joakim Åhlund from Teddybears Sthlm and Caesars, and Nino Keller from Caesars among others. They recently released the psychadelia-inspired EP “Back to Bagarmossen”. Here are two of the tracks:

Fou De Toi – “Dreams” -video

Fou De Toi released a video yesterday to their excellent pop song “Dreams”, which I thought was a good idea to show you:

Navelin – “Ofelia”

Navelin is a five members strong band from Göteborg who have just released their debut single “Ofelia”. Dreamy, soaring, beutiful pop with a singer that sounds somewhere in between Nina Persson and Ana Torroja from Mecano. Here are the two songs from the single:

The Nature – “Din medicin”

The Nature

When the band Alouatta was put on hold, two of the members, Robert och Zeta, decided to do something on their own, completely without any rules or reins. André from Östermalm/Makabert Fynd joined them and The Nature was born. This Autumn they released their debut album “Din medicin” (“Your Medicine”) which also very much sounds  of unrestrained rock, noisy, garage-sounding and sometimes punk vibing. Joy Division, Wired and Brända Barn are mentioned as comparisons, but to get a sense of what they’re doing they describe it best themselves when they explain how the music was created:

We wanted to do something, and we wanted to do that something without any reins or rules. To play in a band often means that someone tells us what to do and what not to do. Now there were the three of us, and the only rule was not to stop any ideas or feelings.
During the first rehearsals we were like kids in a candystore full of feedback, reverb and whatever we felt for. The happiness in the smoking breaks was complete.
Gradually songs began to appear from small parts within chaotic jams and a band was starting to take shape. The music has no real guidelines and no specific style, We do what feels good and that’s enough for us.
